Edgewood Oak Brush Plains Preserve

Edgewood Oak Brush Plains Preserve

40.776515, -73.310143

The preserve contains many rare plant and animal species for hikers to experience.

Several rare plants and animals inhabit this dry, sterile, and sometimes hostile environment. Members of the heath family such as wintergreen, bearberry, blueberry, staggerbrush and trailing arbutus also grow in abundance here. Near the parking area on the east side there is a large clearing where the Edgewood State Hospital and adjacent Pilgrim State Mental Hospital once stood.

Beautiful Trails, Easy Going Most Of The Way
Please note that a DEC permit is required to use these trails. I hiked here on 6-4-22, following the blue disc marked footpath, but also exploring some of the bike trails. The footpath is in very good condition most of the way, but there are two sections that are very overgrown and almost felt like bushwacking. There are also quite a few bike trails that connect with the footpath, and these are well maintained. I really only explored some of the main loop which is marked as easy for mountain bikers, and it was not difficult walking at any point. Please note that a flyers club uses this park to fly model airplanes, and you will hear the planes throughout much of the trail, so if you are looking for a hike with peace and quiet, this may not be ideal depending on the day you go.
